What We Do

ONE Medical Research Institute (2)

We design and conduct clinical trials.

Across all phases and a wide range of therapeutic areas, including infectious and non-communicable diseases.

Who We Are

At ONE Medical Research Institute, we believe that groundbreaking science should serve the people who need it most. Established in 2024 in Cape Town, we are a clinical research organisation (CRO) dedicated to improving healthcare across Africa and contributing to global medical progress.

Our diverse team comprises experienced investigators, clinicians, scientists, research coordinators, nurses, and support professionals, united by a shared purpose: to conduct rigorous, ethical, and patient-focused clinical trials and population studies.

By combining innovation with compassion, we aim to discover new diagnostics and treatments for some of the most pressing health challenges, while ensuring that every participant is respected, supported, and at the centre of what we do.

Meet the Team

Guided by our founders, Professor Friedrich Thienemann and Dr Sandra Mukasa, we work together to advance ethical, innovative research that improves health outcomes across Africa and beyond.

Dr Sandra Mukasa

Co-Founder, and Chief Operating Officer

Dr Sandra Mukasa is a medical doctor and clinical researcher specialising in infectious diseases, HIV, and TB. A UCT graduate with postgraduate training at Stellenbosch, she has led and contributed to clinical trials since 2015, focusing on TB treatment, vaccines, and post-TB cardiopulmonary disease. She is dedicated to improving patient outcomes and tackling Africa’s pressing health challenges.

Professor Friedrich Thienemann

Co-Founder

Professor Friedrich Thienemann is a clinician-scientist in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and global health. He trained at Charité University Hospital in Berlin and the University of Cape Town before joining UCT’s Institute of Infectious Disease in 2009. Dr Karen Wolmarans

Investigator

Dr Karen Wolmarans studied Medicine at University of Pretoria. She has been a sub-investigator on numerous clinical research studies with over 25 years' experience, initially in diabetes and lipid lowering medications and since 2020 in tuberculosis and vaccine studies. Her special interest is in Post tuberculosis cardiopulmonary disease and spirometry in tuberculosis.

Dr Fareda Jakoet-Bassier

Investigator

Dr Fareda Jakoet-Bassier trained as a medical doctor and is currently working as a research clinician/sub-investigator. After graduating from the University of Cape Town, she pursued her passion in treating diseases affecting impoverished communities in and around Cape Town for over 10 years. Her special interest has led her to focus on research in TB/MDR-TB and Post-TB Lung Disease. She is dedicated to bridging the gap between groundbreaking TB research and equitable patient care for the most vulnerable populations. She believes that true medical innovation is measured not only in scientific journals but in the lives restored in the most marginalised communities.

Dr. Ashleigh Taylor

Ndilisa Siwela

Clinical Research Assistant

"Research is a process of learning and discovery. It's how we learn about the world around us, and how we learn what works and what doesn't work in our lives."

Mthobeli Memani

Driver/Recruiter

"Clinical research is studying a disease and involving participants when investigating new treatment."

Avela Ndyuse

Research Nurse

"Clinical research is the engine of modern medicine. Without the data collected in these studies, scientific discoveries would remain theories in a lab, and new treatments would never reach patients."

Thobisa Tyhulu

Clinical Research Worker

Being a former TB patient, being involved in TB Research has been an interesting learning journey. Research is about being curious, transparent, accountable, having integrity and of course finding solutions.

Nomxolisi Gqoli

Driver/Recruiter

"Research is studying a specific topic to get new knowledge and coming up with answers for a specific question by collecting and analysing data."

Nolusindiso Thelma Lokruzo

Clinic Assistant

As the housekeeper, Thelma plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, welcoming, and organised environment for the team and participants. Her efforts keep our workplace comfortable and conducive to productivity.
